China’ s (new) Media Ethic: Negotiating policy and practice in China’s online games regulation
China’s media ethic is quickly evolving to cope with the regulatory challenges presented by rapid development and convergence of new media technology. These challenges include converged media’s transcending of previously established regulatory boundaries, and the introduction of an increasing number of private and international media stakeholders.
These stakeholders hold increasingly powerful economic interests in China’s government-dominated media sector that are difficult to control. The paper explores major stakeholder interests, structural organizations, and interactions that shape regulatory practice in relation to converged media in China today, using the case of online games.
